Having a book come out is always exciting and a day to celebrate, but it’s been a while since a real, tangible, printed-on-paper version of my work landed on my doorstep in a box. I peeled off the tape and pulled out the packing, and behold, there it was. My author’s copy of THE FANTASY FICTION FORMULA–a long time in the making–all shined up and ready to launch.
February 1 is its street date. I’m told by a friend that Amazon at least will be shipping on February 3. Big breath. That’s when we’ll see if the anticipation has been justified, if all you wonderful supportive purchasers will get your money’s worth.
Meanwhile, I’m emotionally pacing the floor like a mommy watching her five-year-old ballerina run onto the stage for that first dance recital.
Fingers crossed.
We’ll see.

The book arrived today, yay. Can’t help but think alot of it will be universal rules and how they apply to fantasy. How to create a plot can be applied to anything. At a glance, I like how the book uses so many examples. That will be very helpful.

Although the book is oriented toward fantasy and uses examples from that genre, its principles can of course be applied to any genre.

Hi, I’ve been reading and studying this book avidly. It has the clearest explanation of how to construct a plot of anything I’ve seen. Thank you! And it’s funny, which is even better! Can I ask a question though? I was working my way though the drill exercise on page 135 (with the excerpt from Shadow War). Am I right that there’s an odd number of A/Rs here? Does it end on an action, without a reaction? Or have I missed something?
I’m so glad the book is helping you! As for your question, at the end of page 135 Caelan’s internalization is in response to Orlo’s question. Caelan doesn’t speak, however. His silence can be considered an action that provokes Orlo to frown and call him a fool.
The very end of this excerpt on page 136 cuts off before the conversation is completely finished.
